Audiobook Speed Calculator
Calculate real listening time based on playback speed.
Quick answers at 1.5x
- 30 min → 20 min
- 1 hr → 40 min
- 3 hr → 2 hr
- 6 hr → 4 hr
- 10 hr → 6 hr 40 min
At 2x, halve the length. Full table from 30 minutes to 20 hours ↓
Playback speed is the audiobook listener's superpower: at 1.5x, a 12-hour book takes 8 hours; at 2x, just 6. This calculator shows your actual listening time at any speed, how much time you're saving, and — most usefully — how many days the book will take at your normal daily listening.
Most listeners settle between 1.2x and 1.8x. Narration is deliberately slower than natural speech (roughly 150–160 words per minute versus 200+ for conversation), which is why modest speed-ups feel normal rather than rushed within a chapter or two.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an audiobook time or length calculator too?
Yes — it works as an audiobook time, length, and playback speed calculator in one. Enter the book's original length and your speed to see the real listening time, or use the table above to look up common lengths at 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, and 2x.
How long is an audiobook at 1.5x speed?
Divide the length by 1.5, which takes a third off. 3 hours at 1.5x is 2 hours, 4 hours is 2 hours 40 minutes, 6 hours is 4 hours, and 30 minutes is 20 minutes. At 2x, halve it: 6 hours becomes 3. The table above covers 30 minutes to 20 hours at 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x and 2x.
How do I work out the time left at my playback speed?
Take the time remaining at normal speed and divide it by your playback speed: 5 hours left at 1.25x is 4 hours of listening. Many apps already show the adjusted figure, so check whether the number you see has changed when you change speed.
Does listening at 2x speed hurt comprehension?
Research suggests comprehension holds up well to around 1.5–2x for most people on narrative material, then declines as speed rises further. The practical advice: increase gradually (1.1x → 1.25x → 1.5x), and slow back down for dense non-fiction or unfamiliar accents.
What speed do most people listen to audiobooks at?
Most listeners end up between 1.2x and 1.8x after some experimenting. Podcast veterans often go faster; fiction listeners who savor narration often stay near 1x — there's no wrong answer.
Do audiobooks count as reading?
Yes. Comprehension of narrative audiobooks is broadly comparable to print, and a book finished by ear is a book finished. Parch treats listening minutes as first-class reading progress — streaks and goals included.
Why does my audiobook app show a different remaining time?
Most apps (Audible, Libby, Spotify) show time remaining already adjusted for your playback speed. This calculator works from the book's original published length — the number on the store page.
