Narnia Reading Order
C.S. Lewis · 7 books · about 22 hours of reading
The Chronicles of Narnia is the most famous reading-order argument in children's literature — and unusually, both sides have a good case. The seven books were published in one order and numbered in another, so the 'right' answer depends on whether you want Lewis's original experience or Narnia's internal history.
Start with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It's the book Lewis wrote first, it's built to introduce Narnia to someone who has never heard of it, and reading The Magician's Nephew first spoils two of its best surprises — the lamppost and the wardrobe's origin.
The order Lewis wrote and released them. Best for first-time readers — the reveals land as intended.
This order is about 22 hours of reading — roughly 6 weeks at half an hour a day.
Average is about 250 WPM. Measure yours in two minutes and every time below recalculates.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I read the Narnia books in?
For a first read, publication order — starting with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Chronological order (starting with The Magician's Nephew) works well for a reread, but it gives away surprises that the first book is built around.
Why are the Narnia books numbered differently than they were published?
HarperCollins renumbered the series into chronological order in 1994, citing a letter in which Lewis told a young reader he thought reading them in internal-timeline order was fine. Many readers and scholars still prefer publication order, since that's how the books were written.
Do I need to read all seven Narnia books?
No — several stand alone comfortably. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Horse and His Boy each work on their own, though the ending of The Last Battle only pays off if you've read the others.
How long does it take to read The Chronicles of Narnia?
About 22 hours at an average reading speed of 250 words a minute — roughly 325,000 words across all 7 books. At half an hour a day, that's about 6 weeks. Your own pace changes that a lot, which is why this page lets you set your speed and shows what's left as you tick books off.
Does my progress save?
Yes — ticking a book saves it in your browser, no account needed. Clearing your browser data resets it, so for a permanent record with dates, ratings, and notes, track the series in the Parch app.
