    Dune Reading Order

Frank Herbert · 6 books · about 57 hours of reading

Dune is refreshingly simple to order and famously hard to finish. Frank Herbert wrote six novels, and they run in a straight line — publication order and chronological order are the same thing. The complication is everything written after his death.

    Where to start

Start with Dune and read Frank Herbert's six in order. Be warned that Dune Messiah deliberately dismantles the first book's triumph — many readers stop there, and stopping after Dune alone is a completely legitimate way to read this series.

Publication order and internal chronology are identical here. This is the canon most readers mean by 'Dune'.

This order is about 57 hours of reading — roughly 4 months at half an hour a day.

Average is about 250 WPM. Measure yours in two minutes and every time below recalculates.

Word counts from Fantasy Read's Book Almanac. Reading times are estimates — editions, translations and your own pace all move them.

How long the 100 most popular books take to read

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have since written many prequels and sequels, including two novels finishing the story from Frank Herbert's notes. They're a separate decision — read the original six first and see whether you want more.

    Frequently asked questions

What order should I read the Dune books in?

Read Frank Herbert's six in publication order: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. Publication order and chronological order are the same for these.

Should I read the Dune prequels first?

No. The prequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson were written decades later and assume you know the original. Starting with them spoils Dune's reveals and gives a misleading first impression of the series' style.

Is it fine to read only the first Dune book?

Completely. Dune is a self-contained novel with a real ending, and it's the most widely loved book in the series by a wide margin. Dune Messiah intentionally complicates that ending, which is exactly why some readers stop at one.

How long does it take to read Dune?

About 57 hours at an average reading speed of 250 words a minute — roughly 855,000 words across all 6 books. At half an hour a day, that's about 4 months. Your own pace changes that a lot, which is why this page lets you set your speed and shows what's left as you tick books off.

    Does my progress save?

Yes — ticking a book saves it in your browser, no account needed. Clearing your browser data resets it, so for a permanent record with dates, ratings, and notes, track the series in the Parch app.
