Read or Listen?
Audiobooks feel faster because you can do other things while they play — but minute for minute, narration is slower than reading. Put in a book and your two speeds, and this works out which one actually finishes first.
Average is about 250 WPM. Measure yours in two minutes.
Reading is 26 min faster.
At 250 WPM, you'd need to listen at about 1.61x to match your reading pace. Below that, reading finishes first.
Assumes 275 words per page and narration at 155 words per minute, the usual publishing target. Real books vary — enter the audiobook's actual length above for a closer answer.
Whichever wins, it counts
Parch tracks reading and listening in the same place, with minutes of audio counting as real progress toward your streak and your goals.
Is it faster to read or listen?
For most people, reading wins at normal playback speed — and it surprises them. Audiobook narration is deliberately unhurried, around 150 to 160 words a minute, while the average adult reads 200 to 250. So a book that takes five and a half hours to read runs closer to nine hours as an audiobook at 1x.
Speed changes that. Listening at 1.5x is roughly 230 words a minute, which lands near an average reading pace; at 2x you are comfortably ahead of it. The tie point is simply your reading speed divided by the narration rate — for a 250 WPM reader, about 1.6x.
But clock time is the wrong measure on its own. Audiobooks win the comparison that matters by being available during commutes, cooking, walking, and chores — hours that were never going to be reading time. A slower format you can use twice as often still finishes more books.
A 320-page book, both ways
| Format | Speed | Time to finish |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 200 WPM (slower) | 7 hr 20 min |
| Reading | 250 WPM (average) | 5 hr 52 min |
| Reading | 300 WPM (fast) | 4 hr 53 min |
| Listening | 1x | 9 hr 28 min |
| Listening | 1.5x | 6 hr 18 min |
| Listening | 2x | 4 hr 44 min |
A 320-page book is about 88,000 words at 275 words per page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it faster to read or listen to a book?
At 1x, reading is faster for most people — narration runs about 150 to 160 words per minute against an average reading speed of 200 to 250. Listening overtakes reading somewhere around 1.5x to 1.75x for a typical reader.
What playback speed matches my reading speed?
Divide your reading speed by about 155. A 250 WPM reader breaks even near 1.6x; a 200 WPM reader breaks even near 1.3x; a 300 WPM reader needs about 1.9x. The calculator above works it out from your own number.
How long is a 300-page book as an audiobook?
Roughly nine hours. Three hundred pages is about 82,500 words, and at a narration rate near 155 words per minute that comes to about 8 hours 50 minutes at 1x — which matches what most publishers list.
Does listening count as reading?
Yes. Comprehension of narrative audiobooks is broadly comparable to print, and a book finished by ear is a book finished. Parch counts listening minutes as first-class progress toward streaks and goals.
Should I choose the faster format?
Not necessarily. Clock speed matters less than how often a format fits your life — audiobooks turn commutes, chores, and walks into reading time that otherwise would not exist, which usually beats being marginally faster per hour.
