Lord of the Rings Reading Order
J.R.R. Tolkien · 7 books · about 64 hours of reading
Middle-earth is less a series than a library, written across fifty years and published across seventy. The good news: the reading path most people want is short and unambiguous, and the deeper material can wait until you know whether you want it.
Start with The Hobbit, then read The Lord of the Rings. Save The Silmarillion for after — it's a mythology, not a novel, and it rewards readers who already care about Middle-earth. Skipping it entirely is a perfectly normal way to love Tolkien.
The path almost every reader should take. The deeper books come last, once you know you want them.
This order is about 64 hours of reading — roughly 4 months at half an hour a day.
Average is about 250 WPM. Measure yours in two minutes and every time below recalculates.
Word counts for The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion from Popular Novel Word Count. Unfinished Tales is estimated from its unabridged audiobook, and The Children of Húrin is approximate. Reading times are estimates — editions, translations and your own pace all move them.

Frequently asked questions
Should I read The Hobbit before The Lord of the Rings?
Yes, for most readers. It's shorter, lighter, and sets up the ring, Gollum, and Bilbo — all of which The Lord of the Rings treats as known. You can start with The Fellowship of the Ring if you prefer, since it recaps the essentials.
Is The Lord of the Rings a trilogy?
Not as written. Tolkien wrote one novel; the publisher split it into three volumes in 1954–55 for cost reasons. That's why The Two Towers ends so abruptly — it isn't a book ending, it's a volume break.
Do I need to read The Silmarillion?
No. It's a mythology written in a high, distant register, not a sequel, and plenty of devoted Tolkien readers never finish it. Read it if you finished The Lord of the Rings wanting the history behind the songs and names.
How long does it take to read The Lord of the Rings?
About 30 hours for the trilogy at an average reading speed of 250 words a minute — roughly 455,000 words across The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Add The Hobbit and it's about 37 hours. The whole Middle-earth shelf on this page, including The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and The Children of Húrin, is about 64 hours.
Does my progress save?
Yes — ticking a book saves it in your browser, no account needed. Clearing your browser data resets it, so for a permanent record with dates, ratings, and notes, track the series in the Parch app.
